"What is the difference between a medical esthetician and a regular esthetician? Do you offer courses for the higher certifications?"
  • Print

Unfortunately, no state board recognizes medical esthetician licensing. A lot of institutes or schools will say they have a medical esthetics program, but there is no official licensing. With the rise of medi spas and physicians incorporating skin treatments into their practice, the demand for knowledgeable skin therapists is crucial. A lot of the medical spas will do onsite training when it comes to specific protocols and treatments. It’s important that you also check with your state board, as they will have regulations about percentages and specific treatments you are allowed or not allowed to do. It is also important to know that some medical treatments such as medical peels are not covered by salon liability insurance. If you are interested in going into the Medical side of esthetics, it is important that you are comfortable with your knowledge of how the skin works, skin analysis, and specific concerns like pigmentation, aging etc.
