"What are the ingredients in soap? I want to tell my clients what to look for so they buy soap-free products."

Soap contains residual alkali from the processing procedures, which explains why all soap has an alkaline pH of about 9; the skin's natural pH is about 4.5 to 6, so the alkalinity strips the natural barrier lipids from the skin. This can lead to sensitization and dry skin. Soap does not have to include an ingredient list, but all other cosmetics do. We suggest using a cleanser or cleansing bar that uses syndets, or non-alkaline cleansing agents, that are gentle enough for the skin.
