  • Join the Multi-Masking Movement

    Charmaine CooperThere are many trends that have helped to shape the canvas of the skin care and cosmetics industry; many of which reflect the way consumers have evolved over the generations in their perception of skin care. But no one can argue that the generation of consumers today depict the most education-hungry and -accessible consumers of our time.

    One trend that we find taking quite a lead among consumers now is “multi-masking”. But is this really a trend or more of a movement? In the past, the landscape of skin care masques have always been mysterious to consumers. Until now. Consumers have moved from the lack of comprehension of masks to a clearer understanding.

    multi mask imageThis could not have been achieved without the support of professional skin therapists worldwide. For years, skin therapists have understood that one size never fits all! In fact, there are no two skins alike. Skin conditions constantly change. And with these constant changes that the average person goes through, as a result of the weather, diet, hormones, lifestyle choices and stress, multi-masking just makes sense. Masking still is, today, the quickest way to achieve visible results in the skin’s tone, oil presence, hydration/radiance levels and inflammatory levels.

    Often at times, all of these concerns can show up at once! And if one size does not fit all, multi-masking can support in a brilliant way. Any of these concerns can be addressed in just 7-10 minutes with masks – day or night, just a few times a week. The key to making the most of multi-masking is to not combine the ingredients in one area or zone – but to multi-mask the face zone by zone as the conditions dictate.

    Here are some recommendations you can give to your clients:

    For oily skin, recommend a clay based mask to absorb excess oil. This is a concern, commonly found in the T-zone of the face. Oil balancing ingredients include Activated Charcoal, as well as Bentonite and Kaolin clays.

    For dehydrated, dull or sensitive skin, a hydrating and calming mask will calm and lock in moisture levels. These concerns can be prevalent in the cheek areas, and may sometimes involve the neck and chest. Look for ingredients such as Cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera, Chamomile and Avena Sativa (Oat) that are extremely beneficial for optimal moisturization and turn down redness levels.

    For lackluster, hyperpigmented or dull skin, vitamins are a must. This is a common concern in the chest, possibly cheeks and forehead area. Vitamin A, C and E along with key amino acids help to recover the skin’s health and vitality, revealing a brighter and more radiant skin.

    Having a comprehensive understanding of these common issues and simple approach with multi-masking will position you as the go-to skin therapist to remedy many concerns at once. Because great skin always begins with great education.

    So, go ahead and tell your clients to join the multi-masking movement. It’s well overdue!

  • It’s Ok for Dad to Grow His Mo!

    Even Dads need to be picture perfect for Father’s Day. The question is: Are they “selfie” ready or not? No doubt, Father’s Day is a day where many kids will be posting selfie shots with their fathers, and fathers with their kids; after all, social media rules our world! And fathers of all ages will want to put their best faces forward (like mothers on Mother’s Day) for the digital world to see.

    Dad’s grooming habits have shifted from the back burner and are now commanding a greater deal of focus. Statistics estimate that the size of the global male grooming market will be worth about $21.4 billion in 2016! This, no doubt, includes skin care, hair care and of course, the now trending Beard care. So the next question is: to “grow the Mo” or no?

    For many men, growing a beard is a rite of passage. It should be understood that there is more to growing a beard than putting down the razor. But one, need not shriek back at the thought of Dad growing his beard. With a simple but proper grooming routine, common concerns can be avoided. Here are some basic tips that can help make everyone else, along with Dad, love his Mo.

    1. Itchy skin. An itchy face is often attributed to the growth of the facial hair. Normally, this subsides after about two weeks. If itchiness persists longer than two weeks, it is likely that the skin is tight and dehydrated. Using stripping soaps will dry out the skin and deplete natural oils, leaving it itchy and tight.

    Tip: Use a non-stripping cleansing bar that contains Allantoin to help soothe, Oatmeal to stop itch and Tea Tree to purify both the hair and skin. Wash with cool water – this helps to not only close and constrict the follicles of the hair, but also to calm the skin.

    2. Knots and tangles in the beard. It’s not just the hair on the head that needs attention. When growing a beard, tangles and knots can become quite common. With regular grooming, this can be easily controlled.

    Tip: While the hair is still wet, use a good wide-toothed comb to comb through the hair for less tangles. This also helps to remove any excessive hairs that may be damaged and are at the end of their lifecycle. Do this daily, or as often as you cleanse the beard.

    3. Dry brittle beard. Whatever you rub on the beard, gets onto the skin. As stated earlier, soaps strip the skin, but they also dry out the hair, causing them to become coarse and wiry.

    Tip: Use non-comedogenic products on the hair to condition and soften the hair. For sparser beards, use a lightweight moisturizer that contains Wheat Germ, Vitamin E and Grape Seed.  This will condition and protect the skin. Use a moisturizer with a minimum of SPF15 for protection from UV rays.

    For fuller beards, use a small amount of beard oil. This can also double up as a great shave oil (when ready to shave). Search for products with Soybean and Silicones (Dimethicone) to soften and condition the hair and use it with a brush to help distribute throughout the beard.

    Whether it’s at the beginning growth stages or a full grown beard, these simple grooming practices can help Dads capture the perfect moment this Father’s Day!

  • This Is Why We FITE on Nelson Mandela Day

    On July 18th, 2014, IDI Canada took part in our annual celebration of Nelson Mandela Day in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Each year on Nelson Mandela’s birthday, we commemorate his legacy and values by devoting 67 minutes of good will through volunteering and community service.

    At our Toronto Headquarters, we welcomed 30 women from Fred Victor, a community center for underprivileged women in Toronto. We held a high-energy skin savvy presentation where the women cleansed and moisturized their skin. The women then broke into smaller groups to receive a shoulder/back massage, hand massage/exfoliation and make-up touch up!

    Our teams in Vancouver and Montreal also shared in the celebration by putting together backpacks filled with goodies and personal care items for homeless and at-risk youth. Our Vancouver team prepared backpacks for the community service campaign Project Backpack while our Montreal team did the same for the non-profit organization Dans la Rue.

    Canada-wide, we can tell you that it was truly rewarding to give back to those who need it most and we encourage you to continue the movement and help empower the communities around you!
