    As skin therapists we have all at one time felt frustrated when appointments seem scarce, the salon is slow or retails sales are not up to par. However, don’t let these bumps in your career put out your fire! In an industry that can be fiercely competitive, you have to channel your passion, ignite your spark and show the world that you know and love skin. Remember, YOU are the skin therapist that is going to be changing lives (or at least skin health!). The advice is simple…get obsessed, become a true skin enthusiast and an expert in your craft—and most importantly, believe in yourself. The fact is, you already know how to be successful; you may have just gotten distracted for a moment. Let’s get re-focused! Confidence brings clients and if you share this same sense of passion for the industry, then read on for ways to spark your success.

    Get empowered through education

    The best way to learn and experience what is going on in the industry is to continue your education in and outside of the treatment space. Many of us found our way into skin care by actually being a client first; receiving treatments from another professional is an excellent way to experience various techniques and to get inspired. The industry is constantly changing and evolving, and we must be able to do the same. Take the time to strive towards your professional best by staying up to date on product innovations, learning new techniques and ingredients. Whether this is online, in the classroom or receiving a treatment, education = empowerment and clients are seeking that type of elevated training in a therapist.

    Make the connection

    General networking events are a great way to meet people, however, take a moment and think—where are you making your most impactful connections that not only inspire you but the business you’re in as well? Kick start your philanthropic spirit by getting involved with groups or initiatives that create meaningful relationships, where people want to propel each other’s success. Client’s like to do business with professionals who do good. Get involved and give back.

    Put your PR On

    Consider this as your personal rave, your personal reputation, your passion re-ignited. Take charge of brand YOU by sharing with your clients why you love what you do and why you are the best. Are you an exceptional brow specialist? Are your extractions painless? Is your massage the best in the city? This is not the time to be bashful about your talents. Be proud of what you do, as there is nothing wrong with bragging as long as you can back it up. In other words, you’re kind of a big deal.

    Get local on your social

    Even if you don’t have a million followers on Twitter, you do have local raving fans and they want to know what you recommend for treating the skin. With social media you can create that instant connection with clients and even gain a few new ones in the process. Your advice on skin health can be given anytime, any day by posting about what you do on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Clients want to be educated and will readily read and re-post your skin care secrets. Don’t be shy about your healthy skin tips, embrace your inner expert and share! You can even fill up that empty spot in your schedule by using your social media to instantly alert clients that you have an opening versus calling them. Trust me, they are checking their Facebook page more often than their voicemail.

  • January and Jelly Beans: How Organizing Will Help You Meet Your Goals

    One of my highlights in January is buying a new planner and diary for the year ahead. I love the sense of new beginnings that it gives me. Re-organize, re-group and re-focus – that is my January motto.

    While many may balk at the prospect of reworking tasks or plans, reorganizing can be incredibly motivating and can set the tone for a productive and rewarding year.

    Have you given your year ahead any thought yet? Do you have ambitious plans to drive your dreams forward?

    What a great start to the year for those of you that have been decisive!

    If not, don’t panic, you are not alone and there is still time to get onto it. I have had many a conversation with those who feel they are just too busy for all that sensible sorting out nonsense. Or you may be someone who has just become wrapped up in your daily process and simply not stopped to consider the possibilities in a new year.

    Even if you are anti-New Year’s Resolutions, resolve to dedicate a couple of hours to a little reorganizing and you might surprise yourself with all that can be achieved through a little task tackling.

    I highly recommend an administrative spring clean as a starting point. By dealing with all that tedious paperwork, writing up important diary dates and mapping out your intentions for the year, you will make great strides towards making your ambitions realities, along with having more time to do the stuff you really want to do. I would add that tediousness always needs to be balanced with pleasure…that would be a welcome little bag of Jelly Beans in my case! I am sure you will have your own favorites to support you through the somewhat mundane chores, but I guarantee you will be invigorated by the process in the end (not just high on sugar!).

    I usually find that by consciously and actively reorganizing myself I almost can’t help regrouping. Could I fit in more time with so and so? Do I want to keep up with this particular commitment? Am I still happy participating in or contributing to this activity? And so forth…

    When I was about 24, this exact process made me realize how much I wanted to travel and explore life abroad. I set in motion a plan that took four months to come to fruition and I moved from sleepy Durban, South Africa to busy, buzzing London, in the United Kingdom. A big dream had become a reality by simply getting organized.

    Working in Britain also made me realize that I wanted so much more from my skin care career and that has led to a fantastically enriched 18 years with The International Dermal Institute teaching all over the world. I am grateful every day for making the bold move to leave a stable job of 5 years to pursue travel dreams.

    Making a little time to reorganize, will give you opportunity to regroup, and inevitably re-focus. It may be just what you need to fire up your career, make those desirable life changes or simply make more of your current situation.

    January is the month where the New Year’s Resolutionists battle it out with the Cynics and Complacents. Some would say resolutions are a waste of time, as most rarely last beyond January. Yet, I would say that making them and keeping them depends largely on how important those resolutions are to you and your future.

  • 5 Key Assets to Land the Job of Your Dreams

    As part of my role I am responsible for recruiting my team. I’ve interviewed literally hundreds of people over the years, so I’d say I’m pretty qualified—from an employer’s point of view—to share with you some key assets I like to see from a candidate. Take a look at these 5 simple tips to land the job of your dreams.

    1. A well written resume can change your life

    A powerful resume should be concise, with sufficient applicable content to get you an interview—ultimately it has to ‘sell you’ to the employer by making yourself an attractive proposition on paper. Ensure it’s honest, include what you believe to be your strengths and areas that need development, every employer knows no one’s perfect. Include your qualifications, work history, key duties and how long you’ve worked in each role, please state the month as well as year you began. A nice touch is giving a brief reason for leaving each position.

    I’m never impressed by anyone who just emails me their resume without an accompanying cover letter. It allows the employer to get a sense of who you are. In brief, explain your career goals and why they are aligned with the vacant position, as well as providing a summary of your skill set that matches the job description. Ensure to include what you respect about that business and why you really want to work for them. Be enthusiastic and make it personal.

    And before you hit ‘send’, have someone who can effectively proofread it, there’s no excuse for mistakes and they could cost you the job!

    2. Do your homework

    Go prepared by knowing as much about the business, their culture and the role as much as possible. If applying for a position in a spa or treatment center, ensure you’ve checked out their menu of services, know their trading hours, which treatments you’re already skilled in delivering and the ones in which you may require additional training. Acquaint yourself with the product range(s) they use.  It’s also a good idea to check their online reviews and see what their customers are saying about the business, chose one or two you can happily quote.

    3. References

    It’s amazing how some people listed on a resume have no idea they are actually that person’s referee! It’s so important to speak to your referees prior and ensure they are still happy to provide a reference, and to let them know they may expect a call. At the same time check you have the right contact details for them. Avoid putting a referee down who may not provide you with a positive reference (it happens), it can cost you the job! Referees need to hold senior positions from your most recent employment history.

    4. Personal branding

    You’re your own walking, talking brand. How you speak, what words and tone you use, how you chose to dress, how you wear your hair, present your nails, your jewelry choices, all reflect ‘brand you’. You need to demonstrate a positive image to the prospective employer, and one they can see also aligns with their own.

    Be aware of:

    •  Your voice mail message with “busy par-tay-ing woohoo, leave a message!” just may need changing while in the pursuit of a new job!

    •  The email address like ‘crazymadwoman@gmail’ is perhaps not the one you should be sending your resume from.

    •  Do a Google search of yourself and see what comes up, check if there is access to your personal social media e.g. Facebook page. See what a prospective employer sees when they do a background check on you, if it’s not favorable, get it deleted fast!

    •  Who you speak to pre and post meeting the interviewers, often staff members will be asked how you presented yourself ‘outside’ of the interview room.

    From the first initial conversation on the phone through to the interview itself, it’s vital you present the very best of yourself.  Any uncertainty, ask friends and family for help, check out websites, video tutorials on successful interviewing. And never be late, if the worst happens and you are, ensure you call to apologize and let them know you’re running late.

    If you change your mind or secure another position don’t just not show up! People remember those who demonstrate negative behavior. Always do the right thing and withdraw your application. You never know when you may cross paths with the interviewer or business again!

    5. Follow up

    Either call, send a handwritten note or the last option, email to thank them for taking the time and giving you the opportunity to be interviewed. You can reiterate your great interest and excitement in the position, and let them know you’re looking forward to hearing from them in the near future.

    I know it may sound obvious, but never go for a job that your heart’s not in it, find yourself a role that will bring the best out of yourself and you’ll really enjoy. Now all that is left is to do is wish you successful job hunting!
